Hours: 20 hours/week, Schedule will vary between Monday & Saturday
Location: 158 East 115th Street, Suite 144, New York, NY 10029
Public Transportation: 6 train to 116th Street or M116 to Third Avenue
Pay: $25/Hour
Anticipated Start/End Date: July 20 - August 28, 2020 (Closed July 4) - Dates may be delayed due to COVID restrictions
Position Purpose:
Cohort Leaders are the primary supervisors for each Outdoor Leadership Academy (OLA) Cohort, two groups of nine 14-15-year-olds. The Cohort Leader is responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding participants in their personal growth and professional skills. Outdoor Play Cohort Leaders are the primary supervisors for the fitness, cycling, and obstacle race design activities and implementation at Concrete Safaris’ Outdoor Leadership Academy.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Participate in the development and implementation of project-based, service learning experiences for participants in the OLA program within the mission and outcomes related to outdoor play. Lead outdoor play related field trips. Train youth to lead neighbors through CS' Weekly Play Space Summer Series at Jefferson and Washington Houses and at street-based events held throughout the summer. Evaluate outdoor play program in mid-term and end-of-season reports, and as necessary.
2. Ensure that OLA staff and participants know and follow safety and educational procedures. Apply basic youth development principles in working with participants through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth. Assure that participants are properly supervised at all times.
3. Lead the daily care and maintenance of outdoor play equipment and street-based event locations. Ensure that the storage rooms are kept tidy and that supplies stay in their designated area. Set-up related equipment for events, activities and programs as needed prior to event start.
4. Be a role model to participants and staff in your attitude and behavior. Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
5. Represent the organization when interacting with parents or community members. Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their children to have a successful experience.
6. Ensure that participants wear masks and socially distance, and model this behavior throughout the summer.
Equipment Used:
Helmets, bikes, lights, splash guards, rain jackets and pants, boots, bells, obstacle challenge resources, camping supplies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to solve problems, mediate conflicts, and exercise sound judgment. Ability to follow-through. Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task. Bilingual is a strong plus. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willing to work irregular hours and on Saturdays in the summer with daily exposure to the sun, heat, rain, bugs, and other outdoor creatures.
Qualifications (Minimum Qualifications and Education):
High School diploma is a must, College Degree preferred.
NYS Mandated Reporter, First Aid, & CPR.
Must be at least 21 years of age.
