NYC Open Streets - Street Team Volunteer Application

Position Purpose:

NYC Open Streets - Street Team Volunteers are ambassadors for neighborhood health. They are responsible for assisting their respective Coordinators with closing East 115th Street from Park to Third Avenues so that neighbors can walk, bike, scoot, dance, and move at a social distance.

Essential Job Functions

1. Move and replace barriers daily to ensure emergency vehicles, essential deliveries, and access-a-ride can enter and depart a given block.

2. At all times, volunteers assisting with the closure must wear personal protective equipment.

3. Post and replenish signage mandating social distancing and slow vehicular travel speeds.

4. Ensure that all vehicles and cyclists adhere to an advisory 5MPH speed limit when driving on the block.

5. Keep cross avenues open to traffic.

6. Let neighbors know that their parked cars will not be towed by NYPD as a result of the NYC Open Streets.

7. Be a role model to neighbors in your attitude and behavior. Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. Set a good example to children and others in regard to general procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.

8. Represent the organization when interacting with parents or community members. Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their children to have a successful program experience. Follow safety and security protocols when children are in public while presenting a positive image of the organization.

9. Ensure that the streets are free of hazardous debris. Notify lead staff of supplies needed for removal.

10. Count daily participants. Share stories with CS Staff about how the streets are being used. Take photos only with permission of participants.

Relationships:

Maintain excellent relationships with all program staff, participants, families, and partners.

Equipment Used:

NYPD barricades, NYPD and DOT signage, bucket or chair, street.

Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Must have experience working, volunteering, or living in our community.

Ability to interact with all age levels.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.

Ability to count and record numbers of participants.

Physical Aspects of the Job:

Ability to observe participant behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate techniques.

Ability to observe staff behavior, asses its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.

Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.

Physical ability to report an emergency.

Endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, and stretching.

Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment.

Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record and communicate appropriate participant activities and ability to lift up to 50lbs.

Willingness to volunteer in the afternoons with limited or simple equipment and facilities and daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, rats (on occasion), and household pets. LIABILITY WAIVER & RELEASE AGREEMENT

This Liability Waiver and Release Agreement {the “Agreement”) sets forth the parties’ understanding and agreement with respect to your participation in the NYC Open Streets - Street Team hosted by Concrete Safaris (“CS”), which is currently scheduled through 2020 (the “Program”). Your participation in the Program is contingent on your execution of this Agreement.

WAIVER AND RELEASE

In consideration of your ability to participate in the Program, you, on behalf of yourself and your heirs, executors, administrators, representatives and assigns, hereby release, waive, discharge, covenant not to sue and hold harmless, CS, its directors, officers, employees, agents, successors and assigns (hereinafter referred to as the "Releasees") from any and all claims, damages, actions, costs, expenses or losses, whether known or unknown, which now exist or which may exist in the future including without limitation, attorneys’ fees, property damage, personal injury, illness or death, whether caused by negligence, omission or otherwise, in connection with or arising out of your participation in the Program, and you further agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Releasees from and against any and all claims, damages, liabilities arising out of your participation in the Program.

You acknowledge and agree that your participation in the Program involves certain risks to you and that you are voluntarily participating in the Program with knowledge and understanding of the dangers involved. In particular, you acknowledge that the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has been declared a worldwide pandemic, is extremely contagious, and that federal, state and local health agencies and governments recommend social distancing and other protective measures to help prevent the spread of the virus. You acknowledge that, even with the use of protective equipment and other safety precautions, you may be exposed to or contract COVID-19 during the course of your participation in the Program, and you, on behalf of yourself and your heirs, executors, administrators, representatives and assigns, hereby release, waive, discharge, covenant not to sue and hold harmless the Releasees from any and all claims, damages, actions, costs, expenses or losses arising out of or in connection with any potential exposure to COVID-19 (the release in this paragraph and the foregoing paragraph collectively, the “Release”).

Accordingly, you hereby assume full responsibility for the risk of any bodily injury, illness or death or property damage to your personal property while you are participating in the Program.

You further expressly agree that the foregoing Release is intended to be as broad and inclusive as is permitted by the law of the State of New York. If any portion thereof is held invalid, it is agreed that such offending provision of the Release shall be severed and the balance shall continue in full legal force and effect.

You understand and confirm that by signing this Release, you have given up considerable legal rights and that you have signed this Release freely, voluntarily, under no duress or threat of duress. You also hereby certify that you are 18 years of age or older and are mentally competent to enter into this Agreement.

You hereby represent that you have read, understand and fully agree to the terms of this Release.

GENERAL TERMS

This Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of New York, without regard to principles of conflicts of laws.

This Agreement and all rights and obligations hereunder shall be binding upon and shall inure to the benefit of your heirs, executors, representatives and administrators and CS’s successors and assigns. You may not assign your rights under this Agreement, without the prior written consent of CS.

This Agreement contains the entire understanding between the parties on the subjects covered here and supersedes all prior agreements, arrangements and understandings, whether written or oral, regarding the subjects covered here. You acknowledge that you have not relied on any statements, representations or promises not specifically contained in this Agreement. This Agreement may not be changed or any of its provisions waived orally, but only in writing signed by both parties.
