Job Title: Health Media / Photo Educator, Nonexempt (Seasonal) Reports To: Programs Director, Pay: $22/Hour, 15 Hrs/Wk, Timeframe: September 14, 2020 - June 18, 2021

Position Purpose: To further the mission of the organization through the development and delivery of professional development in health media through a PhotoVoice curriculum documenting the pandemic.

1. Develop and deliver a photography-based health media program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the participants. ⬥ Write lesson plans that meet program outcomes and the abilities of the participants. ⬥ Evaluate abilities of participants. ⬥ Design and deliver health-focused photography activities that make use of the organization’s urban environment, and use the photography resources most efficiently. ⬥ Host an end-of-season photography exhibit featuring youth’s work, inviting local community members, officials, and funders. ⬥ Evaluate the success of the health media program.

2. Ensure that program staff and participants know and follow safety and educational procedures ⬥ Assist in the implementation of staff training for photography. ⬥ Train other staff in their responsibilities with photography workshops. ⬥ Ensure participants and staff follow safety procedures. ⬥ Assist participants with the development of photography kits for use by groups and for special events.

3. Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in the photography program area. ⬥ Maintain the photography equipment, including cameras, memory cards, batteries, chargers, framing supplies, power cords, and any other items used in the management of the workshops. ⬥ Ensure the security of the photography equipment and supplies, including clear inventory and planning for replacement of supplies in a timely manner. ⬥ Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair. ⬥ Clean photography area, keeping it free of hazards and debris.

4. Be a role model to participants and staff in your attitude and behavior. Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. Set a good example to participants and others in regard to general program procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and citizenship.

5. Represent the after school when interacting with parents and community members. Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their City Surfers to have a successful experience. Follow safety and security protocols when City Surfers are in public while presenting a positive image of the after school.

Other Job Duties:

Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.

Participate enthusiastically in all activities, planning and leading those as assigned. Participate as a member of the staff team to deliver and supervise special events, and other activities and organizational functions.

Relationships:

Educators have direct relationships with the counseling staff. Educators are expected to set up and clean up their projects. In the event that there is a serious maintenance issue, Educators may notify the Programs Director for assistance from maintenance staff. Care of the facility and equipment is important on a daily basis, and Educators must sign their supplies in and out as they retrieve or return them to storage or the office at the end of each day.

Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)

Must be 18 years of age or high school graduate. Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR and NYS Mandated Reporter prior to first day of work. Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work. Ability to interact with all age levels.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Understanding of the development needs of youth. Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in program areas designated after school program areas.

Physical Aspects of the Job:

Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to participants and staff. Ability to observe participant behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist participants in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of participants. Endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and program activities. Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate participant activities/programs and the ability to lift 50lbs. Willingness to work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc.
