Public Health AmeriCorps Coordinator - 2023/24
Classification: Nonexempt
Reports to: Programs Director
Days: Up to 40 Hours, Schedule will vary between Monday & Saturday
Location: 158 East 115th Street, Suite 144, New York, NY 10029 (Will involve working at Jefferson or Washington Houses in East Harlem)
Public Transportation: 6 train to 116th Street or M116 to Third Avenue
Pay: $25/hour
Anticipated Start: November 2023
Position Purpose:
Concrete Safaris’ PlacemakingCorps Coordinator will be responsible for supporting Public Health AmeriCorps members, ages 17+, in programs, services, and activities with placement, trainings, referrals, evaluations, resources, and supports. The PlacemakingCorps Coordinator will lead the enrollment, orientation and other duties as assigned for PlacemakingCorps. The PlacemakingCorps Coordinator will be responsible for interacting with local high schools, colleges, and universities, community centers, and businesses to spread the word about the direct service opportunities for individuals, ages 17+, at Concrete Safaris, and seeking opportunities for participants to grow, learn, and thrive.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Assist in the recruitment, direction, supervision, and organization of Public Health AmeriCorps members to meet the intended member outcomes.
Conduct all interviews and assessments, as needed, prior to placing individuals in cohorts. Act as liaison to members once they are placed. Work with the Programs Director to ensure prompt and accurate submission of enrollment, payroll, and evaluations of members, as applicable. Facilitate the member payroll orientations. Facilitate weekly member meetings. Conduct individual supervisory meetings with members. Monitor and review incident reports and inform programs director of all incidents. Responsible for the evaluations of all members at the middle and end of each program. Responsible for the success of positive and innovative service delivery.
2. Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of program activities for Public Health AmeriCorps members within the mission and outcomes.
Monitor activities including recruitment, registration, and collection of documentation, orientation, payroll, and program implementation. Conduct pre-assessments for all work sites and perform weekly assessments of work sites during the programs.
3. Train Public Health AmeriCorps members to conduct outreach, meet with, and refer participants for medical, health, education, and professional opportunities, including:
Conducting check-ins with participants and families to support their needs, and refer them for services utilizing NowPow, building a database of outside resources, and constructing and tracking a database of referrals. Posting opportunities for engagement programming led by CS and partnering agencies on CS social media. Distributing regular notifications about opportunities through Remind.com and MailChimp.
4. Facilitate professional development, health promotion, and other workshops.
Follow prepared curriculum and develop new curriculum as needed. Facilitate bi-monthly speakers, panels, and trainings in a variety of related fields. Ensure that Public Health AmeriCorps members finish their term with a post-program plan, and are placed in public health related jobs or educational programs.
5. Proactively contribute to public awareness of Concrete Safaris.
Promote community events and programs led by Public Health AmeriCorps members.
6. Be a role model to members, participants, and staff in your attitude and behavior.
Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. Set a good example to members, participants and others in regard to general participant procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and citizenship.
7. Represent the members when interacting with parents or community members.
Follow safety and security protocols when members are in public and indoors, while presenting a positive image of the organization. Attend community meetings, connect with local leaders, submit event notes to Programs Director and Executive Director within 48-hours of attendance.
Equipment Used:
The Public Health AmeriCorps Coordinator will use a computer and office equipment daily, and may also be asked to utilize specialty program equipment
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Understanding of the development needs of youth and adult participants. Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in program areas designated program areas. Demonstrated ability to “pitch” and “sell” programming to possible participants. Strong networking skills. Ability to follow-through. Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Computer literate. Some travel in and out of New York State may be required. Bilingual a strong plus.
Qualifications (Minimum Qualifications and Education):
Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be a college graduate. Must pass multiple required federal and state background checks prior to employment. Must be a U.S. citizen or US National or Lawful Permanent Resident. Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR. Must submit a health history record and examination form prior to the first day of work. Ability to interact with all age levels. A minimum of three (3) years of related experience working in the field of youth development or youth workforce development and developing project-based experiences. Academic background in Communications, Youth Development, & Workforce Development. Life experience in and passion for the outdoors and healthy, active living a MUST. COVID vaccine proof required.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to participants and staff. Ability to observe participant behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist participants in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of participants and projects. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and complete program activities. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate participant activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willing to work irregular hours and on Saturdays with daily exposure to the sun, heat, rain, bugs, and other outdoor creatures.
