Outdoor Leadership Academy - Kids Coordinator - 2023/24
Classification: Nonexempt
Reports to: Programs Director
Days: Up to 40 Hours, Schedule will vary between Monday & Saturday
Location: 158 East 115th Street, Suite 144, New York, NY 10029 (Will involve working at Jefferson or Washington Houses in East Harlem)
Public Transportation: 6 train to 116th Street or M116 to Third Avenue
Pay: $21/hour
Anticipated Start: November 2023
Position Purpose:
Concrete Safaris’ Outdoor Leadership Academy (OLA) - Kids Coordinator will be responsible for supporting child participants with placement, trainings, referrals, evaluations, resources, and supports. The Education Coordinator will lead the enrollment, orientation and other duties as assigned for after school and summer camp. The Education Coordinator will be responsible for interacting with local schools, community centers, and businesses to spread the word about the direct service opportunities for children at Concrete Safaris, and seeking opportunities for participants to grow, learn, and thrive.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Assist in the recruitment, supervision, and organization of child participants in order to meet the intended participant outcomes, and refer them for wrap-around services as needed. Co-facilitate weekly staff meetings. Monitor, review, and evaluate program activities and incident reports within the mission and outcomes.
2. Ensure that staff and participants know and follow safety and educational procedures. Apply basic child development principles in working with participants through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth. Assure that participants are properly supervised at all times.
3. Be a role model to participants and staff in your attitude and behavior. Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. Set a good example to participants and others in regard to general procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and citizenship.
4. Serve as a programming liaison between participants, their guardians, and the general public. Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their participants to have a successful program experience. Maintain program bulletin board at partnering school. Establish a Parent Committee for after school programming. Attend community meetings and connect with local leaders.
5. Proactively contribute to public awareness of programs and events at Concrete Safaris through social media, e-mail, e-newsletters, and participant messaging systems.
Other Job Duties:
Ensure supervision for participants while transported to and from scheduled field trips off of CS property from time to time. Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested. Complete required 15-hours of professional development per year.
Relationships:
Works with children, families, staff, interns, and members to ensure successful service delivery. Reports to the Programs Director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding of the development needs of children. Ability to relate to children and adults in a positive manner. Demonstrated knowledge and skill in designated program areas. Demonstrated ability to “pitch” and “sell” programming to possible child participants and families. Strong networking skills. Ability to follow-through. Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Computer literate. Some travel may be required. Bilingual a strong plus.
Equipment Used:
The OLA-Kids Coordinator will use a computer and office equipment daily, and may also be asked to utilize specialty program equipment.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to participants and staff. Ability to observe participant behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist participants in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of participants and projects. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and complete program activities. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate participant activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willing to work irregular hours (such as attending evening community meetings) and on select Saturdays with exposure to the sun, heat, rain, bugs, and other outdoor creatures.
Qualifications (Minimum Qualifications and Education):
Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be a college graduate. Must be certified in First Aid/CPR and be a Mandated Reporter. Must submit a health history record and examination form prior to the first day of work. Ability to interact with all age levels. A minimum of three (3) years of related experience working in the field of child development. Academic background in education, child development, or similar. Life experience in and passion for the outdoors a MUST. COVID vaccine proof required.
