Outdoor Play & Gardening Internship Application
Position Purpose:
Outdoor Play & Gardening Program Interns are caregivers for each child participant. The Outdoor Play & Gardening Program Interns are responsible for assisting their respective Coordinators with planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out outdoor play and gardening activities and guiding children in their personal growth and daily living skills.
Essential Job Functions
1. Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of children in their group within activities and throughout the events or programs in order to meet the intended outcomes. Apply basic youth development principles in working with children through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth. Assures children are properly supervised at all times. Be aware of the implement safety guidelines.
2. Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for children within the mission and outcomes. Responsible for assisting with the teaching of activities. Actively participate in all program areas as assigned. Assist Coordinators with providing for a progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities. Assist Coordinators with designing and leading weekly field trips. Assist in program areas such as cyclin, fitness, gardening, nature adventures and art, and all other camp activities, as directed.
3. Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for children and staff. Provide the daily care of each child within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs. Ensure that children are directed to the Coordinators in the event of an emergency or medical situation. Be alert to children's needs and report personal and/or health problems to the Coordinators; discuss with executive director when appropriate . Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to Coordinator.
4. Be a role model to children and staff in your attitude and behavior. Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures. Set a good example to children and others in regard to general procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
5. Represent the organization when interacting with parents or community members. Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their children to have a successful program experience. Follow safety and security protocols when children are in public while presenting a positive image of the organization.
Other Job Duties:
Provide supervision for children while children are transported to and from program or during scheduled field trips off of organization property. Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested. Maintain accurate attendance records.
Relationships:
Maintain excellent relationships with all program staff, participants, families, and partners.
Equipment Used:
Interns may utilize equipment provided within each activity workshop as well as school computers, tables and chairs, and other classroom and field trip materials, as directed by Coordinators.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Must be a high school graduate or equivalent OR have one year of experience working with children under 13 years of age.
Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR and NYS Mandated Reporter prior to first day or work.
Ability to interact with all age levels.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Understanding of the development needs of youth.
Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner.
Demonstrated knowledge and skill program areas designated camp program areas.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
Ability to observe camper behavior, asses its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.

Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
Endurance including prolonged standing , some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, and stretching.
Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities.
Normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/ programs and ability to lift up to 50lbs.
Willingness to work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities and daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, etc. We offer an exciting and innovative work environment with an organizational culture committed to serving all members of our community.
